Donovan McNabb, my quarterback

(Originally posted on April 4, 2010) A few hours ago my buddy Dave from Cincinnati called me with the news that Donovan McNabb just got traded to the Washington Redskins.  At 9:30 PM the Eagles head coach Andy Reid held a press conference to publicly announce the trade.  You’ve got to be kidding me. There are two different emotions going around in my mind.  One is about Donovan’s destination.  Why to the ‘Skins, one of the Eagles’ conference rival teams..!?!?!?  I really do understand the business side of this.  The Eagles truly wanted him to go to the place he preferred.  I bet the ‘Skins gave the best trade offer […]

Spring has come— fishing season is here!

(Originally posted in March, 2010) This week has been IU’s spring break week.  I’ve been taking advantage of this unusually mild weather lately and have gone fishing a few times already this week.  I don’t remember going fishing during the spring break in the past, so I suppose we are lucky this year to have had a few warm days before the break that raised the water temperature for some good fishing this week! There are many different kinds of fishing — the kind I like is fresh water fishing using artificial baits.  I really love lure fishing for bass and fly fishing for trout!  For some reason I don’t

Philadelphia

(Originally posted in February, 2010) My mobile phone’s area code is 215, and that’s a Philadelphia area code.  When I switched my mobile carrier from Verizon to AT&T, I was already an Indiana resident, and I was afraid they would force me to give it up.  But I found a way to retain my good old 215 number, and I’m happy about it. I like the city of Philadelphia, perhaps just because I lived there nearly a decade, and I haven’t lived longer in any other towns in this country.  I’m sure Philadelphia isn’t one of the most livable cities in the world, but it has its charms.  I still

Why Bach?

(Originally posted in January 2010) Sometimes people ask me why I’m so into Bach.  They don’t just ask me that when I first tell them I love Bach; they ask me after they realize, following some one-on-one chat with me, that I have made some sacrifices for Bach study, and that Bach literally changed my life.  When they realize that my “I love Bach” is a bit different from your “I love Beethoven (and such),” they ask me why I’m so obsessed with the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. The reasons are manifold.  And perhaps most of them are something we all share — the same reasons why you love

Do you like Bach?

(Originally posted in January 2010) Sometimes this happens to be the first question I ask upon meeting someone new.  I ask this to a stranger hoping that I don’t have to engage in a small talk which I’m utterly bad at.  And I ask myself: what are the odds they say no to that question…?  I really don’t get to meet people from outside the music field anyway.  They all should have something to say about Bach.  What a nice way to skip the small talk and get straight to the substantial conversation! You do not find many musicians who are into fishing or football.  No, not soccer, I mean

25 random things about me (2nd version)

(Originally posted on my facebook page in 2009) 1. I was born with hypopituitarism (pituitary dwarfism), and used to self-inject HGH (human growth hormone) into my thighs everyday growing up. 2. Because of my hormone situation, I was still a soprano when I was 20 years old. I never really experienced adolescence in the way normal kids do. I might still be in pubertal stage without the surge in hormone production. 3. My dad, a limnologist and a retired environmental chemistry professor, is now an amateur beekeeper, and my mom is a potter and a calligrapher. 4. My sister and I once had chipmunks as pets. 5. I think cilantro
